Taoiseach Bertie Ahern had a 30-minute telephone conversation with British Prime Minister Tony Blair tonight to discuss the international situation in relation to Afghanistan and other issues.

In the course of their talks, the two premiers also considered the present position in Northern Ireland, and Mr Ahern followed up a commitment he made in the Dail last week to raise his government’s concerns over British plans to proceed with a MOX nuclear plant at Sellafield on the Cumbrian coast, 60 miles from Dublin.

Earlier today, Mr Ahern confirmed his full support for the military activity in Afghanistan.
