Still a few surprises to spring - Quashie

Portsmouth midfielder Nigel Quashie believes his side will continue to shake up the Premiership after extending their unbeaten start to four games.

Portsmouth midfielder Nigel Quashie believes his side will continue to shake up the Premiership after extending their unbeaten start to four games.

Pompey just failed to go back to the top of the table but their goalless draw at Wolves kept them on the coat-tails of Manchester United and Arsenal.

Quashie insists the secret of his club’s unlikely success lies in the tremendous self-confidence which swept them up from the First Division last season.

The former England under-21 international said: “We have not come into the Premiership with any fear at all.

“We have won the First Division and we deserve to be here. It will bring the best out of everyone at Pompey. If you fear what is ahead you get nowhere.

“We know we will have ups and downs this season but we believe we will get through them.”

Pompey have adapted far better than fellow promotion-winners Wolves, who were merely thankful that the hard-earned point snapped their three-game losing streak.

Teddy Sheringham could have extended their dismal sequence but he wasted a 72nd minute chance by prodding a point-blank effort at the legs of Paul Butler on the Wolves goalline.

Other clear-cut chances were few and far between in a game short on star quality but bulging with commitment and desire.

Pompey boss Harry Redknapp’s biggest gripe was with the performance of referee Andy D’Urso who booked eight players, including five of his own.

Redknapp had berated the fourth official after a challenge on Yakubu Ayegbini and following consultation, he was sent to the stands for the first time in his 25-year managerial career.

Afterwards Redknapp branded D’Urso’s performance “inept” and raged: “Every game I see this season has seven or eight bookings. I think it’s frightening - if you have that many bookings you would think it had been a war.

“If it carries on like this we’re going to end up with no squad in a month’s time because they will all be suspended.”

In a sign of Pompey’s potential and Redknapp’s big ambition he insisted his side could still improve after the fortnight’s break for international matches.

And that was an opinion shared by Quashie, who has resurrected his career on the south coast after a period in which he threatened not to fulfil his undoubted early potential.

Quashie added: “The manager told us we could improve and we believe that.

“We’ve got a whole new team and we’re still settling down a bit despite our good results.”

Wolves boss Dave Jones breathed a sigh of relief after watching his side finally get a point on the board.

Wolves failed to trouble visiting keeper Shaka Hislop but Henri Camara once again looked bright up front and most importantly the defence which leaked four goals against Charlton seven days ago stood firm.

Paul Ince and Alex Rae got a grip of midfield and largely strangled the threat of Pompey’s fast-breaking counter-attacking attempts.

Jones said: “The confidence is starting to come back against and we’ve shown in our last two games that we can compete.

“With a bit of luck we could have had all three points – we took the game to them and we kept it tight.

“I said we had to use Wednesday’s result at Old Trafford as a springboard and we did just that.”

Defender Jody Craddock once again impressed at the back and he could not under-estimate the importance of picking up that first point prior to the two-week break.

Craddock said: “The first point was a big one and I’m pleased it has finally come.

“We had a good performance at Manchester United and we needed to come out and produce another solid job and I think we did that.

“We were much more confident going into today’s game and now we can really look forward to our next one against Southampton.”

There will be no rest for boss Jones, who will spend the weekend searching for one more signing before the transfer deadline with West Bromwich Albion striker Jason Roberts linked with a £2m (€2.9m) move.

Jones is also set to sign former Newcastle goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek before tomorrow’s 5pm transfer deadline.

Injured Wolves striker Kenny Miller will see a specialist tomorrow after suffering a setback in his recovery from a hernia operation which he underwent in the summer.
