The Children’s Minister says he’ll soon bring the heads of a Bill to Government - setting out the legal footing for adopted people to trace their birth information.
James Reilly was speaking at an Adoption Authority conference which has already heard calls for birth information to be enshrined as a “basic human right”.
The Minister says he will submit the completed Bill to the Oireachtas Health Committee to ensure a balance between the right to information and the right to privacy of the natural parents.
James Reilly says it’s a top priority for Government.
"I'm in the process of finalising those legislative proposals and will submit a general scheme [of the Bill] to Government as soon as possible.
"Many members of Government have had personal experiences of this area and are very supportive of what we're doing - and we give it the highest of priorities."
