West Ham lost to Spanish visitors Osasuna after a penalty shoot-out in their Out Performance Display Cup tie at Upton Park.

Defender Anton Ferdinand had given Alan Pardew’s side the lead but after Osasuna’s second-half equaliser, the teams could not be separated in normal time and only when Tomas Repka missed his kick in the shoot-out was the game decided.

In the Hammers’ final warm-up opportunity ahead of next week’s Premiership opener, Pardew handed home debuts to goalkeeper Roy Carroll as well as Danny Gabbidon, Paul Konchesky and Yossi Benayoun.

And after 14 minutes Ferdinand made it 1-0. Matthew Etherington’s corner was met by captain Christian Dailly, who headed down for his defensive colleague to rifle past former Manchester United goalkeeper Ricardo.

Teddy Sheringham and Benayoun had chances after the break but failed to capitalise on possession.

And in the 73rd minute Keith Stroud awarded the La Liga side a penalty when Gabbidon challenged Pierre Webo in the air, and Punal converted from the spot.

West Ham pushed for a winner but the score remained level as the game headed for penalties.

Substitute goalkeeper Shaka Hislop made two saves in the shoot-out and Benayoun wasted his with a nonchalant chip which was saved, before Repka’s kick - which he was allowed to re-take after failing first time – was saved by goalkeeper Juan Elia.
