Teen remanded for 'smashing bottle in refugee's face'

A teenage boy, who allegedly smashed a glass bottle over a refugee’s face then had friends attack him again and threaten him not to give evidence, has been remanded in custody.

A teenage boy, who allegedly smashed a glass bottle over a refugee’s face then had friends attack him again and threaten him not to give evidence, has been remanded in custody.

The 17-year-old boy is charged at the Dublin Children’s Court with assault causing harm to a male refugee, at Harold’s Cross, on February 9 last.

Rathmines Garda Dylan Brady had said it was alleged that the “accused walked by the injured party and smashed a glass bottle over his face".

He told Judge Gerard Haughton today he has taken a statement from the injured party who wants to proceed with his complaint.

Applying to have the boy’s bail revoked, he added that “the injured party has confirmed that a week after the incident he was approached by two youths, he was punched and threatened not to make a complaint. These youths are believed to be associates of the accused and were acting on his behalf.”

Judge Haughton said that the evidence was inadmissible as it was hearsay and he would not be able to use it as a reason to revoke bail.

However, he noted from further evidence that the teenager had been in breach of his bail by not being of good behaviour.

Since he was last in court the boy had been arrested again following an incident where he allegedly interfered with the arrest of another person. It was alleged he pulled at a Garda as she tried to arrest a man and then put up a struggle.

Judge Haughton remanded the teen, who was supported in court by his mother, in custody to St Patrick’s Institution, until May 9 next.

Earlier, the boy had been warned that as a condition of his bail he was not “to have any contact, directly or indirectly with the alleged injured part".
