A man is being held by police in Florida in connection with the murder of schoolgirl Caroline Dickinson.
It was stated that Francisco Arce Montez, 50, was arrested by Miami Beach police last month after allegedly breaking into a woman's apartment.
Caroline, from Launceston, Cornwall, was 13 when she was strangled after being raped in bed in a youth hostel in Brittany during a school trip in 1996.
Last week, East Cornwall Coroner Edward Carlyon recorded a verdict of unlawful killing on the schoolgirl.
Tests are being carried out on a sample of the man's DNA, to see if it matches evidence from the scene of Caroline's murder.
Mr Montez, from Asturias in Spain, was arrested on March 11 by police in Miami Beach after allegedly breaking into a woman's apartment and attempting to commit "a lewd and lascivious act" while she slept.
The DNA test results could determine whether there is sufficient evidence to begin extradition proceedings.
US authorities made the connection to the Dickinson case after an immigration officer on holiday in Europe read a British newspaper article in which Mr Montez was named.
