Two would-be suicide bombers have been captured in Chechnya, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported today.

The two women, residents of the town of Shali, are suspected of taking part in terrorist activities, said the FSB’s Chechen branch. It said they had been preparing to serve as suicide bombers.

Suicide bombings have occurred increasingly frequently in Russia over the past few years, often by women dubbed Black Widows.

Two Chechen women are alleged to have detonated explosives aboard two Russian airliners that were blown up shortly after taking off from Moscow last month killing 90 people.

Another another blew herself up outside a Moscow underground station a week later, killing 10.
