X Factor's Shayne set for album chart success

X Factor winner Shayne Ward is predicted to hit the top of the British album charts on Sunday.

X Factor winner Shayne Ward is predicted to hit the top of the British album charts on Sunday.

Music retailer HMV said 200,000 copies of the self-titled album, which was released on Easter Monday, could have flown off the shelves by the weekend.

The 21-year-old is outselling the rest of the top 20 in the album charts combined.

He is predicted to eclipse the sales for former Pop Idol Will Young’s first album, also a Number One, which sold 187,350 copies in its first week in 2002.

Shayne narrowly missed out on his second Number One single when he entered the charts with No Promises in second place last weekend.

Gnarls Barkley is predicted to retain the Number One spot this week.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said: “If this sales trend continues over the week it would represent a fantastic achievement – making him one of the few UK recording artists to enjoy both a debut Number One single and album.

“There’s clearly no letting up in the Shayne Ward success story.

“If he builds on this momentum and continues applying himself in the right way, making the right choice of songs and avoiding overexposure, there’s no reason why Shayne cannot forge a successful long-term career for himself, particularly if he uses Will Young as his role model.”
