Heavy traffic jams expected in Dublin city centre - taxi drivers protest

There are likely to be delays in Dublin city centre this afternoon, 2pm-4pm, as hundreds of taxi drivers take to the streets.

Why?

Those involved are protesting at changes to their fare structure which are due to come into effect in April.

Where?

The drivers will meet at the Papal Cross in the Phoenix Park at 2pm and will then drive in a convoy to Kildare Street, where they plan to hand deliver a letter to the Minister for Transport around 4pm.

Spokesman for the National Private Hire and Taxi Association, Jim Waldron, said they made a submission regarding the fare changes, but that did not lead to any negotiations.

Today's action is being taken by the Irish Taxi Drivers Federation and the National Private Hire and Taxi Association, but some other taxi groups have voted to accept the new fare structure.
