Malawian judge postpones hearing on Madonna adoption

A judge today adjourned a hearing into Madonna’s effort to adopt a Malawian baby until November 13 and ordered lawyers for a committee of human rights activists to prepare more arguments on their contention that the court should review the adoption process.

A judge today adjourned a hearing into Madonna’s effort to adopt a Malawian baby until November 13 and ordered lawyers for a committee of human rights activists to prepare more arguments on their contention that the court should review the adoption process.

The Human Rights Consultative Committee, a coalition of 67 rights groups, has petitioned the court to make sure no Malawian laws have been broken in the adoption process and to make the committee a party to the adoption so it can help assess the pop singer’s fitness as a mother.

Judge Andrew Nyirenda held an hour an a half hearing today but then adjourned it until November 13 to allow lawyers for the committee to submit additional arguments on why the adoption process should be reviewed and why the committee should be a party to it.

Alan Chinula, the lawyer for Madonna and her husband, film director Guy Ritchie, said he told the judge during the hearing today that no laws had been broken.
