Lee Carsley is set to make his 50th start for Everton when they face Middlesbrough tomorrow – establishing himself as a regular for boss David Moyes.
The 30-year-old opted last season to end his international career to concentrate on winning his place at Goodison – and it barely created a ripple of attention.
In Dublin, where Carsley was not considered a first choice in the Republic of Ireland midfield, it was hardly considered a great loss.
Even at Everton, where Carsley was down the pecking order behind Thomas Gravesen, Alex Nyarko, Tobias Linderoth and Steve Watson, it was viewed as something of a forlorn hope for the Birmingham-born grafter.
But Everton have lost a glut of midfielders after summer cost cutting and Carsley has played in every game this season.
And with Everton unbeaten since the opening day, the praise for Carsley’s industry and desire has come readily from Moyes.
Moyes said: “He has gone about his job quietly but effectively.
“There are a few players in the side who maybe do not get as much praise as some of the other lads do.
“But Lee is one who is deserving of plenty at the moment.”
Carsley has struggled with injury all week after a clash with Manchester City’s combative midfielder Joey Barton last weekend.
But it has not stopped Carsley training, and Moyes said: “He hasn’t missed a day, and after getting a painfully bruised knee you may have expected him to struggle.
“But the fact that he hasn’t tells you a lot about the man.”
Everton, who have had their best ever Premiership start and their best in the top flight since the 1978-79 season, will need Carsley’s determination against a Boro side who have started the season equally well.
Defender Joseph Yobo is also back in contention after overcoming a knee problem, and assuring Moyes he does not want to walk away from the club when his contract expires in 2007 as had been claimed earlier in the week.
