The final instalment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy claimed best picture and best director honours at the Critics’ Choice Awards, while Jim, Kirsten and Naomi Sheridan were named best writers for In America.
Mystic River star Sean Penn was named best actor and Charlize Theron took the best actress honour as a serial killer in Monster.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King beat nine other films to take the top honour, one of four awards claimed by the film. It also won for best acting ensemble. Peter Jackson was honoured as best director.
The awards were given last night by the Broadcast Film Critics Association in Los Angeles to honour the finest in cinematic achievement. Winners are selected by written ballots in a week-long voting period in mid-December.

Best Documentary: Capturing the Friedmans.
Best Foreign Language Film: The Barbarian Invasions.
Best Song: A Mighty Wind, by Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Eugene Levy.
Best Composer: Howard Shore, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
