Hollywood star Cate Blanchett is to attend the premiere of hotly-anticipated new film 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age' in London's Leicester Square.

The Australian actress, who plays the monarch, will be on the red carpet alongside co-stars Samantha Morton, Geoffrey Rush, Rhys Ifans and director Shekhar Kapur.

The event as part of the 51st London Film Festival.

The film is set in 1585, with Queen Elizabeth I continuing to face bloodlust for her throne and the lingering threat of family betrayal having reigned over England for nearly three decades.

It explores the relationship between the monarch and the adventurer Sir Walter Raleigh, played by Clive Owen.

The film is the sequel to Elizabeth, the 1998 Oscar-nominated film which also starred Blanchett.

'Elizabeth: The Golden Age' is the latest from Working Title, famous for the likes of 'Notting Hill', 'Four Weddings and a Funeral', and 'Bridget Jones's Diary'.

Tim Bevan, co-founder of Working Title, describes the film as "an Elizabethan thriller".

Helen Mirren recently played Elizabeth I in the Channel 4 drama of the same name, while Anne-Marie Duff took the title role in BBC1's 'The Virgin Queen'.
