Johnny Herbert has secured a test with new CART outfit Sigma.
The Arrows test driver agreed the deal over the weekend at the Long Beach Grand Prix in California.
His ultimate aim is to get a full-time drive in the American racing series.
Herbert said: "I've got a test organised with the Sigma team.
"So far, actually, it's been very positive. I've also been able to get in early enough to get things going."
Sigma are currently running just one car in the FedEx-backed championship, a Lola-Ford driven by Spaniard Oriol Servia.
Herbert's test for the Illinois-based team is likely to take place next month.
Herbert, who stepped down from the Jaguar F1 team at the end of last season, is hoping to drive in the Indianapolis 500 this year as well as seeking a berth in the Le Mans 24-hour race.
