Catherine Zeta Jones is being lined up to appear in the West End stage version of From Here To Eternity.
Tim Rice is backing a musical of the film about American soldiers in Hawaii before the battle of Pearl Harbour.
He wants Zeta Jones to play the cheating captain's wife Karen Holmes opposite Kevin Spacey, who he hopes will be Sergeant Milton.
In the film, Deborah Kerr played Karen and Burt Lancaster was Sergeant Milton.
Sir Tim told the Sunday Express: "Catherine Zeta Jones would be magnificent because she is a fine actress and because she comes from a musical background."
The newspaper says Madonna is also being considered for Kerr's role and Johnny Depp is being chased to play a young soldier.
The show's writer Stuart Brayson said: "It will be evocative of the movie, but it will also be more sensual and raunchy."
Sir Tim said: "It is the most exciting musical I have heard in 20 years written by a new composer."
