Detectives investigating a double murder linked to dissident republicans in Belfast have made two arrests.

A man and a woman were detained this morning. They are not suspected of murder.

The body of Edward Burns, 36, who was shot in the head, was found near the Falls Road and the beaten corpse of Joe Jones, 38, was discovered in Ardoyne on March 12.

Detectives linked the killings to tensions within dissident republicanism.

Mr Jones, from Poleglass in west Belfast, had head injuries. He had been severely beaten and police recovered a spade near the scene.

Mr Burns, from the Ardoyne area, was found in a car park off the Falls Road near St Gall’s GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) club.
