Three men who are accused of burgling the home of an elderly man in Fermoy before a high speed chase to Cork city in heavy traffic yesterday afternoon were remanded in custody today.
Detective Sergeant Michael Lewis said the car he was driving was rammed from behind by the car in which the raiders attempted to escape.
He said this occurred at around 3pm yesterday afternoon in busy traffic.
The detective said he passed the Honda Civic at one stage and slowed down in front of it in an attempt to slow it down. He said the Civic was driven into the back of the patrol car several times.
The detective sergeant objected to bail being granted to the three men, not least because of the seriousness of the offence, with which they were charged.
Judge Uinsin MacGruairc remanded all three in custody until next Wednesday, April 12.
Each of the defendants is charged with burglary at Cullenagh, Fermoy, Co Cork, the home of an elderly man on April 6.
The defendants are: Liam Hurley of 190 Farranferris Avenue, Farranree, Cork; Jason Nagle of Killala Gardens, Knocknaheeny, Cork, and of 20 Dominic Street, Cork, and Adrian Walsh of 190 Farranferris Avenue, Cork.
Hurley, 23, is also charged with dangerous driving and reckless endangerment.
Nagle, 29, is accused of being in possession of stolen property and house-breaking implements.
A fourth individual, who is a juvenile, was not brought to court or charged with any offence so far.
