A Malaysian state leader wants to call in army troops to cull tigers following a spate of attacks on humans.

WWF conservationists say they're appalled at the proposed slaughter and are offering to work with officials to find an alternative solution.

Three people have been mauled to death by tigers in the northeastern state of Kelantan since May.

Chief minister, Nik Aziz Nik Mat, says Malaysia has enough tigers and the army should carry out a cull.

The Malay Mail quotes him as saying: "I am all for the shooting of the animals. After all, we have enough tiger population.

"People are anxious. Rubber tappers and villagers have stopped going to their smallholdings and orchards for fear of being attacked by tigers."

He added catching tigers and putting them in zoos puts a strain on government resources which would be better spent on looking after humans.
