Rampart Barca demolish Basle

Barcelona maintained their 100% record in Champions League Group C with a 5-0 rout of hapless Basle tonight.

Barcelona maintained their 100% record in Champions League Group C with a 5-0 rout of hapless Basle tonight.

Goals from Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, Bojan Krkic (two) and Xavi saw the Catalans run up the joint-highest away win in Champions League history.

It was the third successive defeat for Swiss side Basle while Barca remain at the top of the standings with a three-point lead over Sporting Lisbon, who were 1-0 winners over Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Ukrainian side dominated from start to finish, but they were made to pay for their inability to score when Liedson finished with Sporting’s first shot on target after 75 minutes.

Chelsea captain John Terry ended Roma’s stubborn resistance with a second-half matchwinner at Stamford Bridge.

Terry headed home from Frank Lampard’s 77th-minute corner to seal a 1-0 victory and keep Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side top of Group A.

CFR Cluj are now three points off the pace set by Chelsea after losing their unbeaten record with a 1-0 defeat at Bordeaux.

The Romanians were the orchestrators of their own demise as defender Ricardo Cadu turned the ball into his own net in the 53rd minute while Eugen Trica was sent off right at the death to cap off a miserable evening.

In Group B, Inter Milan opened up a three-point cushion over Anorthosis Famagusta with a 1-0 success over the Cypriot side at the San Siro.

Adriano scored just before half-time to help Inter collect all three points in what was a solid if uninspiring performance.

Hugo Almeida was the hero for Werder Bremen as he struck a late leveller to deny Panathinaikos a first Group B victory in a pulsating 2-2 draw at the OACA Spiros Louis Stadium.

Panathinaikos striker Vangelis Mantzios looked to have revived the Greek side’s campaign after netting a superb double – both headers – to cancel out Per Mertesacker’s opener for Thomas Schaaf’s Bremen side.

But Portuguese marksman Almeida headed in with just seven minutes left to break Panathinaikos’ hearts and secure a third successive draw for the Bundesliga side.

Liverpool were denied a three-point haul from their Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid after conceding a late equaliser to Simao Sabrosa in a 1-1 draw.

The unmarked Simao drilled home a low shot with seven minutes remaining to cancel out Robbie Keane’s early opener for Liverpool as the two sides, having each won their first two games, remained unbeaten in Group D.

Danny Koevermans scored a brace of second-half headers as PSV Eindhoven claimed their first Group D win with a 2-0 victory over rudderless Marseille.

The match was delicately poised with 19 minutes left when the Holland striker broke the deadlock, connecting sweetly with Stijn Wuytens’ corner.

The 29-year-old then made the game safe five minutes from time when he stooped to glance a header past OM goalkeeper Steve Mandanda following a right-wing cross from Edison Mendez.
