European Union officials today called for Zimbabwe’s opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai to be named head of government in any unity government with President Robert Mugabe.
EU spokesman John Clancy said the EU is fully supporting African Union efforts to push for the creation of a government of national unity between the two foes.
He told reporters today that because Mr Tsvangirai won the first round of the presidential vote any transitional government should have him as prime minister or head of government, with powers to push through reforms.
AU leaders said they were “deeply concerned” about political violence and reports that Zimbabwe’s presidential run-off was not free and not fair.
