The death toll from the cold snap which has gripped Europe for more than a week has surpassed 300.

Last night, French authorities found the body of a homeless man who had frozen to death, bringing to at least 306 the number of people known to have died in the sub-zero temperatures.

The mercury dipped to as low as -40C in Finland while in Rome, traffic was virtually paralysed by black ice as snow covered the city.

Meanwhile, almost 400 transatlantic passengers heading for London's Heathrow were left stranded in Shannon overnight, after two British Airways flights were unable to complete their journey due to the weather.
