A British journalist held captive by militants in north-western Pakistan since March has been released, officials said today.

The British High Commission in Islamabad said Asad Qureshi was now free but gave no more details.

Qureshi was making a film on militancy for the UK's Channel 4 TV station when he was seized.

Many other news organisations did not report his abduction at the request of Channel 4, which said it feared media coverage of the abduction could complicate efforts to get him released.

The High Commission gave no details except to say Qureshi had been released and was being assisted by consular officials.

Qureshi was abducted in Pakistan’s tribal regions close to the border with Afghanistan. Large parts of the area are under control of Islamist extremists who are hostile to outsiders.

He was travelling with two former Pakistani intelligence officials. One of those, Khalid Khawaja, was executed by the militants. The fate of the other captive, Sultan Amir Tarar, was not immediately clear.
