Super Sizing back at Gowran

Last year‘s Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Sizing Europe makes an early return to action in the PricewaterhouseCoopers Champion Chase at Gowran Park on Saturday.

Last year‘s Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Sizing Europe makes an early return to action in the PricewaterhouseCoopers Champion Chase at Gowran Park on Saturday.

Henry de Bromhead’s stable star reappears over two and a half miles with connections still not ruling out a big target over three miles later in the season.

He was due to run in the King George at Kempton last season, but the original staging of the race was put back due to the weather with De Bromhead choosing not to send him over twice in two weeks for the rescheduled event, won by Long Run.

On his sole attempt at three miles he was beaten just four lengths by Kauto Star in the JNwine.com Champion Chase at Down Royal last November.

On his return to the minimum trip Sizing Europe was a most impressive winner of the two-mile championship at Cheltenham, following up his victory in the Arkle over the same course and distance 12 months previously.

“Andrew (Lynch) schooled him here on Monday and we were all delighted with him. The ground should be perfect for him on Saturday and this looks to be a nice starting point,” said the trainer on his website, www.henrydebromheadracing.com.

“He’s done slightly more work at home than this time last year, and he seems to be in great form.

“He’s sure to come on for the run so we’ll see how we get on this Saturday and make plans from there. It’s great to have him back.”

Sizing Europe will not have things all his own way with Ryanair third Rubi Light declared, although his trainer Robbie Hennessy stated earlier in the week that his participation depends on weather the forecast rain arrives and he will not be risked on fast ground.

Davy Russell is back on Rubi Light, having won on him at Punchestown last November.

Lynch had struck up a good partnership with the six-year-old but is retained by Sizing Europe‘s owner’s, Alan and Ann Potts.

“I schooled him the other day and he‘s in great fettle,” said Russell.

“But it‘s very ground dependant if he‘ll run. Saying that, it‘s bucketing down in Ireland now and I‘m not far from Gowran so we should be all right.

“He just improved all last season and he feels different now to when I last rode him in a race.

“(But) Sizing Europe is a special horse, so it won‘t be easy to beat him.”

Finger Onthe Pulse, Lenabane and Coolcashin complete the small but select field.
