Prso quits Gers penalty taking

Rangers striker Dado Prso has revealed he has sacked himself as the club’s penalty taker.

Rangers striker Dado Prso has revealed he has sacked himself as the club’s penalty taker.

The Croatia international netted from the spot to hand his side a vital 1-0 win at Hibernian yesterday.

That cut Celtic’s lead at the top of the SPL down to four points ahead of Saturday’s Old Firm derby at Ibrox.

But if Rangers are awarded a penalty then someone else will have to take it as Prso admitted he did not want the responsibility after missing a second spot-kick at Easter Road.

It almost proved costly as Ian Murray had a great chance to equalise but headed against a post in stoppage time.

Prso said: “It was really hard at the end because I missed a penalty and they had a really good chance.

“I am happy now and I was happy when I scored the first one but I tell you, when I didn’t score the second one I felt really bad for my friends, the fans and for everybody. Next time somebody else is going to take the ball.”

Nacho Novo netted from the spot to earn a win at Dunfermline last month but is set to miss the Celtic match through suspension.

He was sent off for kicking out at Craig Rocastle in the first half and will be banned unless an appeal to the Scottish Football Association is successful.

That could therefore mean Fernando Ricksen stepping up to the spot should there be a penalty award against the champions.

Prso said: “Nacho has taken penalties and we also have Fernando. But now I have missed somebody else will want a shot. The gaffer will decide but I think somebody else will take the next one.”

Prso insisted strike partner Novo had been harshly treated by referee Willie Young, who also red carded Hibernian defender Gary Caldwell for bringing down Hamed Namouchi for the first penalty.

“I think it was a harsh decision because the referee didn’t see the incident,” said Prso. “It was a key moment in the game because it is always difficult to beat Hibs at home. We can really be satisfied with the score.”

Victory on Saturday lunchtime, by a penalty or otherwise, would bring Rangers to within a point of their rivals, who were beaten at Ibrox in the CIS Insurance Cup last week.

Prso said: “We must win, with Nacho or without Nacho. If we want to be champions this year, then we must win.”

A decision on whether Rangers will appeal is expected later today, with manager Alex McLeish indicating he will speak to chairman David Murray and director of football business Martin Bain first.
