Ryder Cup player Costantino Rocca was disqualified from the Smurfit European Open today for missing his tee-off time – the day after American cup captain Tom Lehman received a two-stroke penalty for being a few seconds late.
The 48-year-old Italian, nine over par overnight, missed his alarm call and did not arrive until well after his scheduled 8.41am start.
Playing partner Leif Westerberg set off instead with a scorer marking his card, but then was joined by Rocca from the sixth hole onwards.
Lehman had misread his third round time and when it was pointed out to him that he should have been on the first tee he ran 80 yards, but failed to get there before he was called to tee off.
