A British man has blamed going through a red light on his colour-blind horse.

John Mulvenna - who was "merry" at the time of the incident - jumped the traffic signal and drove his horse and cart the wrong way up a one-way street.

The 56-year-old traveller denied he was drunk during the episode, which landed him a 12-month conditional discharge and he was ordered to pay £50 (€56.84) towards costs.

Jayne Ormrod, prosecuting at Barnsley Magistrates ‘Court, said: “The defendant was struggling to control the horse and trap.

“He was shouting and had slurred speech.

“When asked why the horse and carriage had gone through the lights he said the horse was colour blind.”
