Klitschko eyes Tyson bout

Vitali Klitschko is prepared to fast-track Mike Tyson back into world heavyweight title contention.

Vitali Klitschko is prepared to fast-track Mike Tyson back into world heavyweight title contention.

The Ukrainian giant still sees Tyson as a credible future challenger despite his shock fourth round loss to Danny Williams in July.

Klitschko defends his WBC title against Williams at the Mandalay Bay resort in Las Vegas on December 11.

But he admitted he still longs for the chance to get in the ring with former champion Tyson.

Klitschko said: “We worked very close with the management of Mike to make the next fight because that is the fight I wanted.

“But Danny Williams came along and destroyed that dream and now I am resolved to fight him.”

Tom Loeffler, representative of Klitschko’s K2 promotions company, indicated negotiations with the Tyson camp may not have gone to waste.

Tyson is likely to be top of the list of future contenders if Klitschko dispatches Williams in his first defence.

Loeffler admitted: “If Mike comes back and looks good we know Mike is still a very popular fighter and one who draws a lot of attention.

“So if he comes back and looks good in a fight I am sure he would be an interesting opponent down the road for Vitali.”

Williams is heading out to Las Vegas next week to put the finishing touches to his preparations.

The Brixton man believes Klitschko has made a big mistake in granting him a defence of his title following his stunning win over Tyson.

Williams said: “I give Vitali respect because he could have got an easier fight but he picked me.

“I have had a long build-up, I have surpassed the fitness level I was at for the Tyson fight and I am getting stronger by the day.”
