A long-standing Fianna Fáil Kildare councillor has resigned from the party, following the identification of financial irregularities at a voluntary housing association.
Councillor Mark Dalton had been treasurer and director of the Cill Urnai housing association - which owns and provides housing on a voluntary basis in south Kildare.
It contacted the offices of the Director of Corporate Enforcement and the Garda Síochána, both of which have now begun inquiries.
Speaking to KFM, Director of the Association and Fianna Fáil Kildare TD Sean O'Fearghail said: "It's all the sadder because Mark has given 20 years of dedicated service to Athy, he was a very hard-working councillor.
"He had a particular care and concern for people who are less well off in society.
"It is well known he is a friend of mine, we joined Fianna Fáil together 30 years ago. The whole thing has come as a shock and is akin to a bereavement I have to say."
