IMO annual meeting to get underway

The annual general meeting of the Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) is set to begin in Co Kerry today.

Over the next two days the IMO will be putting forward proposals to the Health Minister Dr. James Reilly which they have labelled their "prescription for change".

Outgoing president of the IMO Professor Sean Tierney has said the AGM is set against the backdrop of election promises and the objectives set out in the Programme for Government.

Professor Tierney believes the way forward is a collaborative approach.

"We have seen an approach to public sector reform that blames and demonizes doctors and other public servants, and I don't think this is a solution going forward," he said.

"In reality, some of the greatest advocates for change in the public sector and in the health sector have been those working in it, rather than those outside it.

"We would see the prescription as being around a collaborative approach that is based on mutual respect."
