Maruyama leads by one in Sony Open
Japan's Shigeki Maruyama is ahead by one shot in the Sony Open in Hawaii.
England’s Justin Rose is one shot off the lead after the second round. He is tied with American Brett Quigley, one behind Maruyama.
England’s Paul Casey, playing his first tournament on US soil since saying he hated Americans, missed the cut by seven strokes when he followed his opening 75 with a 74 for nine-over 149.
Those scores were matched by Michelle Wie, the 15-year-old girl beating just a handful of players.
It was a far cry from last year, when she missed the cut by only a stroke with a performance that reverberated around the golf world.
Wie knew she needed to go low to have any chance of playing the weekend. Any faint hopes of that were all but dashed with a triple-bogey at the par-four sixth.
Maruyama, meanwhile, shrugged off testing winds to card a five-under 65 at Waialae Country Club, which was softened by overnight rain.
“My golf was very steady from the tee to the green,” he said via an interpreter.
Paul Azinger, Jeff Sluman, Tom Lehman and Andrew Magee all shot 68 and are tied with Robert Gamez and Stewart Cink, two back. Gamez posted a round of 66 and Cink was one-under 69.
