There has been an increase of 24% in the number of new mortgages issued in the third quarter of the year, according to the Irish Banking Federation.

There has been an increase of 24% in the number of new mortgages issued in the third quarter of the year, according to the Irish Banking Federation.

The figures are up 10.4% on the same period last year.

It is the first year-on-year increase in new mortgages since 2006.

Almost 4,000 new mortgages were issued during the period, valued at €663m, bringing to almost 10,000 the total number of new mortgages issued during 2012 to date.
