Labour TD Michael D Higgins said he feels the Government did all it could to secure the release of British hostage Ken Bigley.

The 62-year-old engineer from Liverpool was brutally murdered by his captors last night after being taken hostage three weeks ago.

Deputy Higgins was in regular contact with various members of the Bigley family in recent weeks.

He said each and every member of the family had shown remarkable strength and resilience in the face of great adversity.

Deputy Higgins had offered to mediate on behalf of the family in an effort to secure Ken's release.

He said the Government's decision to issue Mr Bigley with an Irish passport was helpful.
