Minister for Transport Martin Cullen is establishing a new committee to rescue the ailing plan for an integrated ticketing system for public transport in Dublin.
The move comes after a new report said that 'urgent action' was needed to ensure that the €30m project did not end in failure.
The new body is being asked to set a realistic timetable for the implementation of the system, which is commonplace in most other countries.
It would allow passengers to buy a single ticket for use on bus, DART, and Luas in the capital.
The committee is made up of Government officials and transport executives and is chaired by a former secretary general at the defence department.
A new report by independent assessors is calling on the minister to act immediately, saying the launch of the technology had reached a critical stage.
Integrated ticketing was first mooted in 2001 and has already cost €9.5m.
