Avocent Corporation (NASDAQ: AVCT), a global provider of KVM switching and network connectivity appliances, has acquired the former Tellabs facility at Shannon, Co. Clare, where it will continue to develop its international headquarters.
In September Tellabs said it would close its Shannon facility by December with the loss of 400 jobs.
The company said that it could no longer sustain the losses brought about the global downturn
The company confirmed the deal today as the full Avocent Corporate Board met at Shannon.
This is the first board meeting the company has ever held outside the USA.
The board is discussing the company’s global corporate strategy.
Avocent purchased the former Tellabs facility outright for a total consideration of $6.5m (€5,6m) including transaction charges, in a deal which significantly strengthens the US firm’s presence in Ireland.
The move to this larger facility is an endorsement of Avocent’s success in locating several high value business functions to Shannon.
The new facility is twice the size of Avocent International’s current facility here where the company employs 100 people.
Avocent said it would continue to grow its operations in Ireland in line with global market conditions.
Avocent’s technologies are used by companies worldwide to command and control information processing requirements across computer and server networks.
Avocent set up its international headquarters in Shannon in 1996.
The company’s facilities in Shannon are its largest outside of the corporate headquarters in Huntsville, Alabama.
