A cat travelled 3,500km from New Zealand to Australia across the Tasman sea.

Douglas the moggy went unseen in a shipping container and survived the 18-day trip to Adelaide, stopping at Sydney and Melbourne.

Workers at the Tauranga plant raised the alarm when they realised their feline friend had gone missing and guessed what had happened to him.

Quarantine officers unpacked containers and were shocked to find him alive.

Emma Cook said: "We started to unpack and he was just sitting there. We were speechless.

"He hadn't made a mess at all and he just came out and sat there."
