Poyet strikes for Spurs

Spurs were indebted to Uruguayan midfielder Gustavo Poyet for their friendly victory over Gillingham.

His first goal came from a second-minute free-kick, catching the Gills completely unawares.

It was not a one-sided game at Priestfield as Paul Shaw and Rod Wallace both tested Spurs goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld.

The equaliser did finally arrive midway through the second period, though there was an element of luck about it as Kevin James’ 30-yarder took a deflection off Yugoslav defender Goran Bunjevcevic.

Tottenham restored their lead with 15 minutes to go, Darren Anderton’s corner finding the head of Poyet eight yards out.
