David Toms’ share of the lead in the Open championship lasted only 10 minutes this morning at a bleak, wet Muirfield.
Toms, the USPGA champion, carded a four-under 67 in glorious weather yesterday to join compatriot Duffy Waldorf and Swede Carl Pettersson at the top of the leaderboard.
Conditions could not have been more different today however with the early starters finding bright sunshine replaced by incessant drizzle, short-sleeved shirts replaced by waterproof jackets.
And Toms quickly became the first, but certainly not the last, to suffer on the tough 448-yard opening hole, finding sand off the tee and taking two to get out.
From there he found the putting surface but two putts from 20 feet added up to a double bogey six and dropped him back to two under, two off the lead.
Playing partner Darren Clarke was three shots better off on the hole, a superb five iron approach to six feet setting up the birdie to get him back to level par.
