John Travolta plans to fly his Boeing 707 to 10 countries this year to help promote airline travel.
He says he wants to show the industry in a positive light after the September 11 terror attacks.
Travolta is working as a spokesman for Qantas Airways, which has painted its logo on the side of his plane.
"Certainly after September 11 happened and the airlines were used to do something so completely destructive, it saddened not just me but everyone else in the world," Travolta said.
He appeared in a pilot's uniform at Los Angeles International Airport and waved from the cockpit of his jet before a press conference to announce the Spirit of Friendship tour.
Travolta will begin his tour on July 1, starting in Los Angeles before heading for Australia and eight other countries, including Japan, Germany, Italy and France. He plans to end his trek in New York.
