The Progressive Democrats will not form part of any Government that intends to build a national stadium using taxpayers money according to the Tanaiste Mary Harney.

Speaking at the launch of her party’s election manifesto, Ms Harney said that the country cannot afford to spend a billion euro on such a project and if it is to get her approval it will need corporate sponsorship.

The Tanaiste’s statement is likely to create difficulty with her current Government colleagues, Fianna Fail, who remain committed to the Sports Campus Ireland project.

The Tanaiste also revealed her intention to sell off state owned assets such as the ESB and Bord Gais to help develop the country’s infrastructure.

The estimated proceeds of such a sale are about €6bn in their election manifesto.

The PDs say that this money would be channelled into a new national transportation fund.
