The boss of a leading UK cake company was cast out of his job today, just six months after taking on the top position.

Chris Thompson stepped up from finance director in November, but failed to stem the flow of profits warnings from Inter Link Foods, which makes Soreen fruit loaf and supplies the major retailers with own-label products.

His job has now been taken by Ian Croxford, who has served as group operations director of Branston Pickle and Bird’s Custard firm Premier Foods since 2003.

The most recent profits warnings came in February and March, when Inter Link said it expected to make an underlying loss for the year to the end of April.

As well as tough trading conditions, the company has been disrupted by its switch to a new central distribution centre at Warrington.
