An U10s football team has won a sponsorship deal with a difference - hooking up with heavy-metal hellraisers Motorhead.

The youngsters, of Greenbank FC in Lincoln, now run out in their all-black strip featuring the metal band’s iconic “Snaggletooth” skull logo and band name above the team’s name.

The North Hykeham team, which are flying high at second in their league, also run out on to the pitch to the band’s most famous track, Ace of Spades.

Team manager Gary Weight, whose son Charlie plays in the side, said the deal came about as he used to know lead singer Lemmy from his days in a rock band in west London in the early 1980s.

“It was from a bizarre idea one evening. I sent an email off to them and they came back and said it was a great idea. They were totally up for it,” he said.

“I knew Lemmy years ago, and for him, I think, the thought of a football team running out with the Motorhead logo made him chuckle a bit, so that’s where it has come from.

“The hope is that we can go out on the football pitch and terrorise the opponents and come away worthy winners.”

But Mr Weight, a former road manager for the Stranglers and Echo and the Bunnyment, said the boys would be sticking with more suitable shirts for games than traditional rock attire.

He said: “Leather or denim kits might be a bit hot to play football in.”

The junior players will have a team photograph taken with the band ahead of their Rock City gig in Nottingham this coming Sunday.

The hard-living, headbanging trio – drummer Mikkey Dee, guitarist Phil Campbell and bassist and fearless leader Lemmy – formed in 1975 after Stoke-born Lemmy had been kicked out of prog rockers Hawkwind.

Band leader Lemmy said later: “They play better than I ever have!”
