Icelander Ivar Ingimarsson broke the deadlock for Reading with a spectacular finish to head them in front after 24 minutes at the Madejski Stadium but Manchester City wasted their first-half chances to take charge.

Paul Dickov allowed Marcus Hahnemann to make a smothering save when he had the Reading goal at his mercy in the 14th minute and Trevor Sinclair shot wide when she should have scored from a Bernardo Corradi knockdown on the half hour.
