Taoiseach: I expect people to obey law on Household Charge

Taoiseach Enda Kenny said today that he expects the Irish people to obey the law, and pay the Household Charge.

More than a million Irish people have still not paid the new tax, despite the deadline for payment looming this weekend.

Government Ministers Lucinda Creighton and Brian Hayes have already admitted that the Government has made mistakes over the charge.

However, speaking in Beijing on the final day of his trade mission to China, the Taoiseach said that he expects people to pay.

"The law is there, I expect that people will obey that law," he said.

"Clearly, individual comments are made by people from time to time.

"I expect people, as they always do in Ireland, to measure up here and come out in big numbers over the next few days and pay their charge which is due."
