Gardai were today trying to discover how a domestic dispute left a two-year-old girl and her father dead from stab wounds - and her mother with serious head injuries.
Neighbours found the child with knife wounds to her neck on the pavement outside her home in Callan, Co Kilkenny after the woman was seen running for help from the house.
Gardai later found the body of the man, in his 30s, inside the house with stab wounds.
The woman, who was also in her 30s, was taken to St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny, where she was said to be in a serious condition.
Today a pathologist was carrying out post-mortem examinations on the child and her father, believed to be a Canadian national.
Neighbours said the man would visit the mother and child every few weeks.
Sources said the incident was not believed to be a dispute over custody of the child.
