Aston Villa’s record signing Juan Pablo Angel was handed his first start of the season in the Premiership clash with Manchester City at Villa Park.
Angel had been troubled by a knee injury during pre-season but he impressed as a substitute in Saturday’s single goal defeat by Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.
Villa manager Graham Taylor also included Peter Crouch and Darius Vassell in what appeared to be an attack-minded 4-3-3 formation.
Summer signing Ulises de la Cruz made way for Angel as Villa looked for their first victory of the campaign.
Unsurprisingly City manager Kevin Keegan kept faith with the side which had gained a deserved 1-0 home victory over Newcastle on Saturday.
Keegan had described that performance as the best by one of his sides in the top flight.
