Two men are fighting for their lives this morning after being seriously injured in separate assaults in Cork and Westmeath over the weekend.

Two men are fighting for their lives this morning after being seriously injured in separate assaults in Cork and Westmeath over the weekend.

A 21-year-old man is in intensive care in Cork after he and another man were attacked in the Knocknaheeny area of the city in the early hours yesterday morning.

The man suffered serious head injuries and is believed to be on a life-support machine.

In Mullingar, meanwhile, a 41-year-old man also suffered serious head injuries after being assaulted outside a GAA club early yesterday.

The attack happened on Delvin Road, outside St Loman's Club, where a 21st birthday party was being celebrated.

The victim, who was married with no children, is being treated at Dublin's Beaumont Hospital, where his condition is described as critical.
