Random bag searches on New York’s underground system were today expanded to include ferries, buses, light rail and air trains in renewed efforts to prevent a London-style attack.
The security measure was also launched in New Jersey after a weekend of jitters which saw a sightseeing bus raided and a bomb scare shut down the nation’s busiest commuter train station.
Police will rifle through thousands of bags today as they embark on the first full week of unprecedented security in the wake of the London bombings.
Checks will also be implemented at Manhattan bus terminal and on JFK and Newark airport-bound trains.
NJ Transit will begin inspections on all transport services to and from Manhattan.
Commuters have largely co-operated with the searches since they were launched just hours after the second wave of explosions in the British capital.
