Fianna Fáil TD Charlie O'Connor has welcomed EU plans to crack down on junk-food advertising targeted at children.

Fianna Fáil TD Charlie O'Connor has welcomed EU plans to crack down on junk-food advertising targeted at children.

The EU has warned the junk food industry to voluntarily cease such advertising within a year or face an official ban.

Junk food is one of the factors blamed for a worrying rise in obesity among Europeans, with one-quarter of all children now considered dangerously overweight.

Mr O'Connor, who is a member of the Oireachtas health committee, said: "We have to understand the challenges that food brings, particularly for young people, and I think in relation to junk food, it is time that there were some controls."
