Dublin Corporation has discovered an illegal dump site in the north of the city containing hazardous hospital waste.

The dump, which is on a 120-acre site owned by the IDA, was discovered by corporation workers laying a sewage pipe in Belcamp, near Clonshaugh.

The hospital waste, which includes syringes, blood samples, operating theatre waste and surgical blades, dates back as far as 1982.

The corporation said the site was also used to illegally dump industrial rubbish. This latest revelation follows the discovery of four illegal dumps containing hazardous waste in Co Wicklow in recent weeks.
