China’s official news agency said a man was given the death sentence for his role in a factory brawl linked to deadly riots in China’s western Xinjiang region.

Xinhua News Agency said the sentence was passed down today.

The June 26 brawl at the Xuri Toy Factory in southern Guangdong province pitted workers from the Uighur minority group against Han Chinese, who make up most of China’s population.

Two Uighurs died in the fighting.

Ten days later, Uighur youths protested in the western city of Urumqi to demand a full investigation into the incident, leading to a police assault and rioting that left almost 200 people dead.

It was China’s worst ethnic violence in decades.
